Summer. Traditions like baseball, the Downtown Farmer’s Market and The Battle of the Brands. Too much? We’re working on it.
So, where do we begin with this BBQ inspired face off? Let’s start with the obvious. You can’t go wrong eating at either of these fine establishments. Each offers something different from flavor to atmosphere and both will leave you fuller faster than you can say “Pass the wet wipe.”
Any online menu with a headline the reads “Meat By The Pound” is just fine by us. In fact, that’s how BBQ connoisseurs around these parts prefer it. These guys aren’t just some local BBQ joint looking for a shout out, they’ve won awards at the KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) and Pit Masters (you may have seen them on TLC). Shad Kirton (pictured) and the crew at Smokey D’s bring some serious hardware. Like a 2010 Pit Masters Championship.
You can tell by the cowboy hat and the stare these guys aren’t messing around. And BBQ is serious business. Lucky for us, you can find four locations in the greater Des Moines area – not to mention on places like Twitter and Facebook. From communicating to your ears and to your stomach, these guys get it. Pass the wet wipe!
The folks at Jethro’s get plenty of national attention as well. Earlier this year they were featured on the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food for their Adam Emmenecker Challenge Sandwich. We tried eating it…took two of us three lunch sessions and we still weren’t done. The Emmenecker Challenge also finished second in ESPN’s Fanwiches Competition – finishing behind only a joint from San Francisco, which has more people than the entire state of Iowa. (Hey ESPN, we think you sold the folks at Jethro’s short!)
But Jethro’s is more than just the Emmenecker. It’s 2-for-1 wings on Tuesdays, it’s killer brisket, jalapeno corn, jeez, even the mac and cheese is ridiculously great. Find Jethro’s Tweeting their ribs off here or making Facebook a little tastier here. Pass the wet wipe!
To close, we’ll quote Robert Earl Keen from his song tantalizingly titled, Barbecue. “If you’re feeling puny and you don’t know what to do, treat yourself to some meat, eat some barbecue.” We’ve added the song below in case you need any more inspiration. Doubtful.
