A Little Help from Our Friends

When you’re passionate about something, people can sense it. Passion seems to bring the best out of others. It certainly brings out the best in me.

I could list all of the personal reasons I am passionate about what Prevent Blindness Iowa does for our community- but I’d like you to find out for yourself through some of the work we’ve had so much help from our friends getting done. With the help of the staff and a rockstar intern, Moriah Lutz-Tveite at Prevent Blindness Iowa, we’ve helped PBI start a social media program. You can find PBI in a number of new places:

The creative we can do. The strategy we can do. But sometimes even ad agencies need a little extra help from our friends to truly bring our ideas to life. We wanted to create a 30 second public service announcement for PBI. This would be promoted on social media platforms, shown at events, the possibilities were endless. Alas, we had no footage.

Twitter to the rescue!

I tweeted that I needed some Iowa footage, images, unused B-Roll stuff for a charity in Iowa. Many stepped up to offer help. None, more so than Mike Vogel of Professional Video.  We talked. He had footage. Great Iowa footage. Sculpture Park footage! HD time lapse footage!!! Vogel was happy to give it to me but wanted to know how I was going to use it. I said something stupid like “I’ll flip it in iMovie and do a voice over, down and dirty.”

Then Vogel stepped up even more. Not only did he want to give me footage, he wanted me to help him put together a professional looking commercial. We wrote a script, Vogel found music, we met for two hours and cranked this out with some help from Professional Video founder Tim Bloomquist.

Here’s the finished product with my (lack of) voice talent:

We’re really proud of how it turned out. And we couldn’t have done it without Professional Video’s help! Huge thanks, guys!

Now the story gets even better.

We work with OnMedia from time-to-time and when I told them about the spot we put together for Prevent Blindness Iowa they must have seen my passion. They offered to run the spot for free. This week those spots started running on MediaCom channels. We owe a big thanks to Leslie Malcolm, Jomarie Tucci, Rod Dougherty and Bob Mongomery from OnMedia for making this happen!

The Prevent Blindness Iowa folks are thrilled. This was truly a group effort and folks at Professional Video, OnMedia and Lessing-Flynn stepped up.

On Thursday, June 17th, Prevent Blindness Iowa is holding their annual Light the Night for Sight event at Johnston Green Days. This event raises a ton of money for Prevent Blindness Iowa to do the things they do best; offer sight-saving programs for children, adults and older citizens.

We’ve formed a team for this event, but in our efforts to get all of this stuff ready to write this post, we’ve been slow in our efforts to organize our team. Can we get a little help from our friends? We’re hoping you can do just one of these things for us.
