A Great Pro-bono Story

Prevent Blindness Iowa, in partnership with Hy-Vee stores, is coordinating the NutrifEYE program during the month of May 2009. The purpose of the program is to educate the public on the important connection between preventing vision loss and nutrition, provide information on what foods and nutritional supplements may help protect against vision loss as well as to provide tools for people to determine whether they are at risk for vision loss.

Prevent Blindness Iowa is working with Hy-Vee dietitians and pharmacists throughout Hy-Vee’s locations during the month of May. The store dietitians will offer vision healthy store tours, diet consultations, recipe demonstration as well as printed materials to distribute to the customers.

As the father of a child with vision challenges I was anxious to see if Lessing-Flynn would be willing to do some pro-bono work for one of my favorite charities, Prevent Blindness Iowa…they were!

Throughout this experience, Lessing-Flynn was able to help develop the name of the program, nutrifEYE, the logo and supporting printed pieces like table tents, posters, iron man displays and grocery bags that will appear in approximately 80 Hy-vee stores. We built a blog site, launched a Facebook fan page for Prevent Blindness Iowa and built a micro site. We could not have done it alone. Companies like Acme Printing Co., Inc. and  Blue Compass Interactive and Kemin Industries Inc, stepped up with financial donations and free support.

The folks at Prevent Blindness Iowa are wonderful people, passionate about what they do and could not have been more appreciative of the support they received. I encourage you to get involved, even if its just becoming a fan of Prevent Blindness Iowa on Facebook, checking out eye health recipes on their blog or letting people know about the program. Maybe you and your family should attend one of their free vision assessments. All of the details can be found on the NutrifEYE micro site.

We feel great about the work we were able to do, but we feel even better for the potential hundreds of people who will be able to maintain their vision through the types of programs that Prevent Blindness Iowa provides. You never know if the next person’s vision they save could be your own!
